I'm sure there's something horrific about my usual sketching process that would make a professionals skin crawl, in that a lot of my works are done in a simple black 'Pilot' ballpoint, as that's what was in the stationary cupboard at work. That or an HB pencil. And as a paper medium, I simply have a cheap notebook I picked up at a junk shop down the road. I'll endeavour to do better detailed versions on larger paper, with a lot more care and attention, but I imagine they'd end up in the badly unfinished pile :P

Something I submitted for the theme of the month, October 08 (featured here) and actually was selected! Theme was 'Cats and Dogs', in reference to rain, as Europe was of course coming into Autumn. We were coming into Spring, but one of those dark showers came across while I was at lunch, which set the mood just perfectly. |

A little doodle I did in March 2009. It was going to progress to a more elaborate concept, but I'm just not good enough yet to make it work. So for now, it's merely an exercise in fur and form. |

My rendition of The Glittering Caves beneath Helms Deep, from Lord of the Rings. Done with a few months in hand to get a detailed run done for the August '08 Theme of the Month on John-Howe.com (check the Links page). The texturing is a bit rough - something I hope to tidy up in the proper version. |

My somewhat hurried draft (done in a mere couple of hours) of the scene for March '08 TotM, based on one of Alanna's photos of St Ursanne (Northern Switzerland). I haven't detailed the forested hill in the background, for one because I'm not a fan of detailing tons of trees, and for another that's something better left until it's done in paint. |

The result of a sketch I started doing while sitting in Western Park, Ponsonby, waiting for Rosie. The foreground is the park, as best I could capture it, and the background is a futuristic representation of the view of Auckland City, with the fanciful idea of an energy dome keeping all the city's pollution in, to better preserve the natural landscape. Well, it's an idea =p Obviously I haven't bothered detailing the grass - something better saved for paint. |

The latest outcropping of my fevered imaginings, based on the start of a story-theme I just began working on again, to a science-fiction scene (obviously!). The background should be black, obviously, but I wasn't going to cover my whole A4 in biro! The orb at top is supposed to be the system's sun - though obviously it's mighty hard to make something glow when it's rendered in black. But that's where the light source is. |
